Cheap, Crappy, Cool, Computers
Nowadays there’s a lot of buzz about the $100 laptop, but I don’t really see why. I am currently using a $35 laptop that I got off eBay with a $25 network card, it was actually such a good deal that my dad bought 9, prices ranging from $12-$55. A $10 pendrive and a $25 USB floppy drive and we were all set.
These laptops aren’t very fast, with a HUGE 4gb hard drive. Really, all you can do with these is run firefox and a text editor, but with these days of web 2.0, that’s a lot. These laptops can check email, tweet, surf the web, kinda play youTube videos (It runs at about 1fps), blog, and just about anything else. It runs a really small form of linux called Damn Small Linux, a mere 50mb, yet very easy to use and with a whole bunch of programs pre-installed.
The only problem with all of this is that DSL is hard to install in the first place (it took us about 3 weeks to figure out), and the supply of extra laptops isn’t gonna last forever. But other than that these things make very good thin client. I love web 2.0.
