iPhone: Heaven in your pocket
So, admittedly, I’ve only had 20 minutes with this amazing device, but something about it just amazed me. I mean, I always knew it was cool, but it’s just something about it that makes it feel too good to be true. Ok, so my inner fanboy is talking right now, and i’ll admit that this probably isn’t the most accurate review on the web. People have used it for hours apon hours, finding everything that they liked and didn’t like, this is just my first impresion:
The internet in your pocket
They weren’t kidding when they said it was “the real” web in your pocket. This wasn’t a normal cell phone web experience: Squinting to read CSS-less, Javascript-less text after waiting an hour for it to load. Over WiFi it was just about as easy to browse on as my iMac. Double tapping always works perfectly, getting just the right zoom level to read the text, but not too much to have to scroll like mad. When you did need to scroll, it was painless and, dare I say, fun. Tilting the iPhone on it’s side makes it just the perfect size to browse on. Having multiple websites open worked great too, although I kept accidently hitting the button, which was kinda anoying, but I guess there’s kinda nothing they can do about that. Overall, the best portable browser EVER. 9/10
Worlds best iPod
I didn’t play with the iPod all that much, but I did try some stuff and it worked really well. Nothing is as satisfying as scrolling through your music in Cover Flow. And by that I mean NOTHING. It was very easy to find everything. Everything sounded fine and looked fine, I dunno what more to say, It wasn’t super special but it was good. 8/10
The world is the worlds best
Google maps seems to be a kind of overlooked feature. I personally think it could replace Mail in the bottom bar. It works very well and is very useful. The lack of GPS is kinda anoying, but come on, how hard is it to press the big giant arrow thingy every time you complete an instruction? It loads very fast over WiFi, I didn’t try edge but I would imaging it is perfectly usable. It has normal or satellite maps, complete with traffic. Add street view and you can look at your iPhone instead of the road! Perfect! It works very well and could be useful in all sorts of ways! 9/10
Typing isn’t painful
There is a lot higher praise than you can give to a keyboard than “It isn’t painful”, but hey, that can’t be said for many phone keyboards can it? I might just have small fingers, but I found it very easy to type on. People have really been ragging on it, but I have to say i’d gladly use that instead of a tactile keyboard. I know it’s a bit anoying that you have to hit a button to get to symbols, but umm, at least on the standard number pad keyboard, you have to press 1 a whole bunch of times to get symbols. I liked it, it was a little hard to type with at first, but even at the end of my 20 minutes I was getting pretty good. Overall, could be better, but it’s pretty darn good. 8/10
Overall
I’m gonna put my money where my mouth is, well, kinda. I’ll save up for one, which means by the time i’m 30 i’ll have one. It’s a great device for me. I can understand peoples quams with it, but none of them are at all deal breakers for me. It is a great device. Admittedly this might be more than some say it deserves, but from me it gets a 9/10 overall.
