The hype strikes back: Too many iPhone complaints
It seems all people do these days is complain about the iPhone. It doesn’t do this that and the other thing, it’s restricted here and limited there. The truth is, if we complained about every tech product as much as we complained about the iPhone, TWiT would be 10 hours long … DAILY. Ok, maybe not quite. I know, it’s in a class of it’s own, but then maybe we should give it some slack, being that nobody has done anything quite like it before and it’s bound to have problems. Here is a look at some of the major complaints about iPhone, my view on them, and why I think the iPhone doesn’t have/do it:
3rd party apps
Ok, so pretty much every other smartphone in the world has native 3rd party apps. You can get hundreds of them installed on your smartphone, things like games, converters, calculators, organizers. The problem is, as with Personal Computers, the more apps you have, the slower/more crash prone your phone. Apple’s solution: AJAX. Many other phones barely (if at all) support Javascript, and even then, the web site is oddly formatted for the screen. Apple decided to take advantage of the main innovation for their phone, mobile safari, for their apps. You can do pretty much anything you can do with any other smartphone app, the only problem is you have to be online and you have to know the URL. The advantage is you don’t have to download/install ANYTHING, you can just go to a directory like the one at iLounge.com, find an app, and click the link. If your online, it’s great, and, at least with the iPhone, you pretty much always are. It would be nice if apple let you put bookmark buttons on the homescreen, plus there are some things you can’t do with a web app, voice recording for example, but other that that I really don’t mind their system.
EDGE instead of 3G
The iPhone lacks the 3G data service that many smartphones have, instead using the slower EDGE network. To me, this is an advantage, here’s why: In the US, EDGE is EVERYWHERE, 3G is only in certain metropolitan areas, I live in East-Outer-Nowhere, 3G does not work in my area, EDGE does. If you are in a 3G area it’s great, but as soon as you leave it your stuck with the 14kbps speeds of the normal phone networks. With EDGE it’s 200kbps everywhere there’s phone service. Also, as Apple points out, 3G consumes more battery, although you’d think, being apple, they could find a way to automatically shut it off when not in use or something. In any case, at least for me, I prefer an EDGE iPhone to a 3G one.
No Adobe FLASH support
Yeah, I know, bummer, but many other smartphones lack it too. The complaint is that they advertise iPhone having the ‘REAL’ web, and Flash is a big part of the REAL web. The problem is with the way you control the iPhone, there is no right clicking, there is no mousing over things, there is no dragging (when you drag it drags the web page), and the iPhone has to know when to pop up it’s keyboard. This hasn’t been too much of a problem for Javascript because, let’s face it, AJAX apps aren’t usually that ‘rich’. You couldn’t add towers in Desktop Tower Defense, You couldn’t jump to another spot in a flash video, you couldn’t see the description of a show on the iEye site. I think the iPhone could have Flash Lite like a few other phones do, but how many flash sites that you know of have Lite versions?
Touch screen keyboard
Most phones are half screen, half keyboard, so both are cramped. The iPhone only has a screen, and the keyboard is part of that. It takes awhile to get used to the lack of tactile feedback, but really it’s not so bad once you do. The iPhone keyboard is larger than the keyboard of any other smartphone that I know of. It’s easier to type symbols and numbers, and the predictive typing works great. No other phone can expand the size of it’s buttons, or change the text on it’s buttons, or hide it’s buttons when not in use. Sure, it’s hard to type on when riding down a bumpy road, but really, what isn’t?
Ok, and just in case you think I’m a total fanboy (which I actually kinda am), here’s some complaints that I can agree with:
- 8GB of storage: $400 for a Nano?
- Recessed headphone jack: Come on apple, play nice
- AT&T lock-in: They’re not that bad, but i’d like a choice
- No GPS: That would make Google earth SO MUCH COOLER
- Locked down bluetooth: iPhone bluetooth keyboard? Nope.
Overall I think it (and presumably it’s younger brother the iTouch) are great and well worth the price.
