Android: Take that Windows Mobile!
Google’s new Android platform is nothing to be scoffed at, it’s no doubt as revolutionary for developers as the iPhone was for consumers, it opens it’s doors wide, offering developers the geeky equivalent of a mansion with a butler and a massage-vibrating desk chair. As a kind of developer myself I find myself drooling at the geeky wonders of this platform, the linux core, the 3D graphics system, the various methods of notification and interoperability, and the overall ability to customize whatever you want about it. EVERYTHING, right down to the home screen and the phone app are user-replaceable and/or customizable.
Unfortunately, because this is the real world, it’s not perfect. The main thing I worry about is it’s main attraction, it’s open-ness. Think how easy it would be to screw up your system, you replace the home screen with a non-legit one, you’re screwed, a buggy/bad app sends notifications every second, you’ll have to figure out on your own how to stop it. Also, this is no iPhone when it comes to media and web browsing. Sure, it’ll functionally do everything the iPhone does, heck, it’s got essentially the same browser as the iPhone (Safari is based on the Open Source WebKit platform used in the gPhone), but it’s just not as usable. Ok, so I haven’t tried the media app but I doubt it has Cover Flow, one of my favorite media features in the iPhone, what I have tried is the browser (Developers can get an emulator that contains the basics of the OS, including Maps and the browser). It’s usable, but without the touch screen or the screen size, it’s just not that efficient or elegant. You have to scroll around and select links with arrow keys, and even I, with my good vision, have to zoom way in to read much.
Overall I have to really give credit to Google for doing this as well as they did, this OS (along with open social) are a developers dream, a great way to make cell phone apps. It’s UI is nothing too special, although it does have quite a few iPhone style effects and transitions, it’s not bad or anything, it’s just a bit too ‘normal’ for my taste, the features the OS ships with aren’t either, what really makes this special is the underlying power that will lead to hundreds of amazing apps in the future. Overall, it’s an excellent competitor to Windows Mobile and Symbian, and I hope to see it get somewhere, it’s not an iPhone competitor, in a sense they’re brothers, revolutionary mobile devices that will change the way we use our phones.
Oh, and as a little note to Java developers out there, google is holding a ‘best android apps’ contest with a total of $10 million in prizes! Actually, don’t enter, ’cause then there will be less competition for my super app that’s coming (maybe), ’cause really, that’s a lot of money!
