So today was a snow day, would’ve been better if it was tomorrow, but still, w00t! Anyhoo, I got really bored, and the stevenote suspense was killing me, so I decided to download the trial version of Cinema 4D, an awesome 3D modeling tool and try my hand at making mockups. Turns out i’m not that great at it, although I came up with some pretty crazy features for the thing, which was fun. I’m not saying this is at all what the, what’s the rumor mill calling it now, MacBookAir will look like this, these are merely mockups of my dream mac. The pictures are sorted by crazyness, least crazy ideas at the top, most crazy at the bottom. So, without further ado, the iTablet (IMO)

Pic #1: This is my idea of what it would look like when it’s closed, I guess it would be like a slider, that would be cool, or just a normal laptop-y thing. The main screen would be a 10in LED backlit screen, I don’t really care if it’s touch or not.

Pic #2: This is kinda based on those Apple patends for large multi-touch trackpads. The idea is that it would have a multi-touch keyboard that could change in context to what you’re doing, like an optimus maximus kinda. I know a lot of people hate the iPhones multitouch keyboard, but I think if it were big enough it wouldn’t really be a problem for me.

Pic #3: This thing would be great as a kinda new age portable DVD/Movie player, but not if you have to hold it up and all, well, ok, maybe i’m just lazy. But, I figure you don’t need the keyboard for movie watching, so you could use it like this. (PS. Like the table? I spent more time on that then on the whole rest of the mockup, you just gotta get Apple tables right)

Pic #4: Ok, this one is the least likely, but this would be the ultimate in comfortable computing. If the keyboard part where detachable, you could put that in your lap and then have the screen somewhere in clear view. So, essentially, you could turn the tablet into a desktop with a bluetooth keyboard on the fly.

There are currenly 1 trillion and 4 social networking websites, growing by about 829.345 per day *. If there is one thing that we don’t need more of, it’s social networks. Unfortunately, the flood of new sites is not even slowing. They are all for different people, or have different ideas/twists to them, to make themselves stand out. Some of these ideas are pretty bad, like weight loss networks and such, but here are some ideas that should NEVER EVER EVER see the light of day. Developers trying to get an idea for a site: shut your eyes right now…

Poopr: Ahh yes, poopr, not my idea, but it’s worthy of the list. Basically, you can track your, umm, droppings. You track their weight, color, and smelliness, then track the changes in a AJAX interface. You can also track your freinds poops and ‘Poop-Poke’ them if they haven’t gone for awhile. The system is connected to an advanced laxitive distribution system, so you always have it when you need it most…

WakeUpr: The alarm clock social networking system. Your freinds vote on what time you wake up. It could be 4am, or it could be 10pm, you never know. Your freinds can also record a wakeup noise. Hours of endless fun, just think about it. A gunshot at 3am, fire alarm at 4am, telephone at 5am. It’s the most fun way to lose all your freinds!

MafiaNetwrk: MafiaNetwrk is just like Myspace or facebook, but with a twist. When one of your MafiaNetwrk freinds makes you mad, or just doesn’t post enough, instead of merely poking them, you can have the mafia go after them. Wage real life virtual wars with all your freinds. Unlike with most social networks, the fewer freinds you have, the better. Just, don’t make anybody mad…

Totally legit, non-monitoring, music downloads site (Brought to you by the RIAA): Who doesn’t like a good music piracy site (other than me), this one features lots of songs, all you have to do is fill in your email address, house address, phone number, and real name. Great! You’ll be on your way to music in minutes, and jail in hours.

MS Network: A brown, gooey, incredibly ugly social network. All your contacts randomly dissapear every 20 minutes. It is slow and crashes the browser a lot … wait, this one’s real!

*Statistics not real

Remember, in the 50’s, when everybody was predicting the future? I don’t, i’m 13. Anyway, it turns out that flying cars were supposed to have been invented 20 years ago, we would eat pills that contain all of our nutrition for the day (no more eating), and many of us would live on mars. Well, umm, not quite. Anyway, here I go with another blog post list thing, what I think we’ll see in the future.

Quantum Entanglement Internet Access

WiFi is great, but it’s reliance on radio waves limits it’s range greatly. The same with radio, and cell phone networks. Wouldn’t it be great if we could be standing on pluto, pirating thousands of movies per second with your amazinf Quantum Entanglement Internet Chip. Here’s how it would work (in theory). Scientists have discovered that it is possible to ‘entangle’ the properties of atoms. If an entangled atom, say, get’s hot, the atom it’s entangled with would too. In theory this could work over any distance. You could have a central station thingy that has 2 atoms entangled with 2 in your computer. It could vibrate (or something) one atom for outgoing data, and ‘listen’ for vibrations for incoming traffic. My science is probably off, but I think in theory, something like that is possible.

3D TV’s and Computers

Here’s something less crazy, Glasses-Free 3D TV (Fun to say) and Computers. Such technology has already been developed by quite a few TV manufacturers like Sharp. The question is, will it be adopted? 3D Movies have been around for a long time, most using the polarization method, some using the Anaglyph method. Both methods had their problems, polarization was expensive, and anaglyph messed up the movie’s color and gave many people headaches. If broadcasters ever roll out 3D TV, and Apple ever gets around to making Mac OS 3D, 3D could finally be a normal, at home experience.

Hydrogen fuel cell cars

This one is more widely known about, and probably the closest to becoming reality. The idea is to use hydrogen not as a fuel for an internal combustion engine, but a power source for an electric motor. Basically, the hydrogen molecule starts out with one electron, one proton, and one neutron. It is forced through a material that only allows protons and neutrons through. The electron ‘wants’ to re-join the proton and the neutron, so it takes the path around the material, which goes through an electric wire to the motor, then back to where the proton and the neutron are. The re-united hydrogen molecule then combines with Oxygen, creating pure water. If we can find a 0-impact way to create hydrogen, we’re all set for environmentally freindly vehicles.

Space stations for normal people

I know I am, by no means, the first person to predict this but it seems like we’re getting close to being ready to take vacations in space. There are already companies offering to take people into space on a combonation rocket/plane, so it seems the next step would be to let people stay in a ’space hotel’. It could use centripetal force to simulate gravity. It could be a spinning wheel shaped design, with people walking inside the wheel so that their heads point to the center. Ok, not my idea at all, but I figure I might as well make this a more comprehensive list.

That’s all for now, might add more later, I dunno.

I dunno, it’s good and all, i’ve used better, but it’s sooo much better than t9. I have not had many problems with this thing at all, other than parts of gmail not working quite right, but that’s not really much of a problem because the built in mail program works so well. What an amazing device, not to like, rub it in … or anything.

No, what I worry about is a future controlled by our former furry for-legged fiesty freinds (say that 5 times fast). They induce you into trusting them and then, WHAM, there goes your all important iPod cable, and you turn around and WHAM again, there go your headphones!

These freakishly horrid images depict the work of one Dallas the Dog, or should I say, Mallas the Hog. He has so far killed many cables, cards, plates, even furniture. In his form of a cute, lovable papillon he deduces his former human overloards into submission, recieving Dingos and Greenies on a daily basis. Currently he is sleeping under a table, no doubt dreaming of total world domination, that or a belly rub.

Aww, but he’s so cute, i’m sure he didn’t mean it. Com’ere big guy. Aww, he’s so cu… *loud growling, barking and screaming*

And just before Harry Potter 7 comes out too…

I’ve been going to camp with a whole bunch of genius’s, somehow we keep getting onto complex and mind boggling topics. Here are some of them for pondering:

-If a 3D figure can be represented on 2D paper, you must be able to represent a 4D hypercube in 3D space, which would then mean that the 4th dimension is not time, but another space dimension. Would our brains be able to see or comprehend it? The question is, how would we represent the 4th dimension? The only way we can draw 3D objects in 2D space is because we know what the 3rd dimension looks like, we don’t know much about the 4th dimension. We’d have to find some sort of scientifically quantifiable way to calculate the shape of the 4th dimension. Also, would it be possible to have 4D space that can represent a 5D object. Are there an infinite number of dimensions?

-Where did energy and matter start? Where did the universe come from. Has it always been there? If not, did energy come first or matter? Was the big bang just a part of a trillion year cycle of big bangs or was that the beginning of the universe. Has time been going forever, or was there a beginning of time? Has the matter that makes us up been here forever? Can matter/energy actually be created?

-If an object is moving away from you at the speed of light, would you see it? Would it’s light just stand still, moving away from the object at the same speed that the object was moving away from earth? Would the light be able to still move at the speed of light towards you? Would the light of an object moving towards you at the speed of light move at twice the speed of light?

-Is it possible for matter to move the speed of light? Would matter go back in time when it hit the speed of light to before it hit the speed of light, creating an endless cycle? When moving the speed of light would time actually stop or would it just appear to have stopped? Why is Energy equal to mass times the speed of light squared? What relation does the speed of light have to matter, why isn’t E=M squared? What units of mass do you use? How did einstein figure that out? Why is the speed of light what it is?

-Why is the universe expanding at an increasing rate? Shouldn’t gravity be slowing the expansion? What force is propelling the objects outwards? What is gravity? Is there really a space/time fabric or is that just the analogy einstein used? Would it be possible for Anti-Matter to still be around. If light has no mass, how does the gravity of a black whole affect it. What is light?

-How does quantum entanglement work? Could it be used as a portal? Could it be used on a large scale? How do atoms get entangled? How do they ‘communicate’ with no radio signal or anything?

-Why was George Bush elected? How did he get through Yale?

All very perplexing questions, the most amazing thing is that this all came from kids my age. Wow, I feel dumb now. My brain no function goodly.

After doing a research project on the mitochondrion, I realized something. There is absolutely nothing in the world that you can’t find on the web. Ok, maybe not, but man there is very little you can’t find. For example, there’s a whole YouTube video on the process of phosphorylation. I can’t pronounce it, but theres a whole video about it wow.

Or what about wikipedia having 9 pages on mitochonrion. I can’t understand a word they say (even in the english one), but hey, look at the pretty pictures . That’s not even the most amazing article wikipedia has. They have a ton of stuff about my home town, like way more than I knew. Tons of information about the education techniques of my school, and the famous article with every person who’s ever been on twit. What DON’T they have?

Then, who could forget Google? I have never not found what I was looking for there. Whether it’s ego searching, looking for the name of a website that I forgot, researching, or looking for pictures of the type of dog my grandparents are getting, Google never let me down.

Ok, so this has kinda been a pointless rant, I just wanted to publicly marvel at the near unlimited amount of info available to us at all times. People used to study for years to find out what I can learn from going to wikipedia. As leo laporte points out, we don’t need to remember anything anymore as long as google it there. Just … wow, what a world. People 20 years ago would never have even dreamed of what we take for granted today. It makes me wonder what the future holds for us…

Wow, that was corny, remind me never to do that again…

I’m just gonna go through and give my reactions to all of it, because I know how much you people care about what I think

Being a complete apple fan boy I am obliged to start with the Apple news. Actually, most of this was announced before the expo, nut whatever.

DRM-free music is here! Called iTunes Plus…:

Ok cool, DRM free music, we kinda already knew this was either coming today or tomorrow, along with an update to iTunes (7.2). Definetly a big step in the right direction, now they just need some more labels. I don’t see why EMI is still selling their regular quality music DRM’d, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers. There are still anti-piracy measures in their (your iTunes username is embedded in the track), not that that’ll stop anybody who knows what they’re doing, but they’ll probably catch some kid or something. I dunno, being non-obtrusive that’s not like, a bad thing.

iPhone will support 3rd party apps (probably):

“This is an important tradeoff between security and openness. We want
both. We’re working through a way… we’ll find a way to let 3rd
parties write apps and still preserve security on the iPhone. But until
we find that way we can’t compromise the security of the phone.” -Steve Jobs

I honestly never thought Apple would open up the iPhone, but hey, his Steveness never lies. He doesn’t exactly come out and say “Yes”, but he is definetly alluding to apps. He has a good point though, if you could make apps for iPods (easily), they’d be about as hacked as Windows. eww.

Apple TV will soon play YouTube videos:

Another thing I never thought apple would do. I’m actually wondering why they didn’t add YouTube like features to iTunes and stick that in the apple TV. I think it’s a good move, I just never thought they’d interface with third party services like this. On the other hand, for $300 you might as well get a Wii and use the Opera browser to watch youtube videos.

I think that’s pretty much it for Apple, there’s some more smaller stuff buried in here.

Now for Microsoft, they actually came out with something that, dare I say it, I’m excited about.

Microsoft Surface: iPhone on a table:

Microsoft Multi-Touch, erm, I mean surface. It’s basically a Multi-Touch table, an 20 inch iPhone. I think when it says “A new way that isn’t new at all” in their intro that wasn’t what they meant though. There are some cool features though, like it recognizes physical objects placed on it. Like, if you place your wifi-enabled camera on it, it will download all of it’s photos and display them on the screen. You could then drag those photos onto another persons camera placed on the screen. So yeah, it can be a bridge between the real world and the digital world. It’s coming to select retail outlets (for comparing producs) and restaurants (for buying food) this Winter, no word on when it will be available to consumers. All I know is, I want one running Mac OS X.

Palm Foleo: 1999 all over again:

It’s an ultra-portable laptop, virtually identical to the 9 year old Toshiba Portege 3110 that I just bought off ebay for $20. Good thing the Foleo is a mere … $500?!? Yeah, umm, palm, you might wanna read over Chapter 11, you’re not gonna last very long if this is the best you can come out with.

That covers the big news anyway, so yeah, not all that much…

Recently I’ve been fixing it and adding new features. Here are some lists and stuff:

New Features:

Tweet Log keeps track of what tweets have sent, and what tweets have failed

The “What is to come” section auto-updates every 10 seconds

Notifications are delivered via a twitter style banner

Various bug fixes…

Tweets now send … most of the time

Known bugs:

Hour 00 GMT seems to not work very well

Tweets sometimes, randomly, don’t send

I hope to have it running like butter before tomorrow

I am using the free Blender to make all of the stuff, and am finding it powerful, yet slow and “janky”. The interface is astonishingly efficient, yet not easy to look at.

Nowadays there’s a lot of buzz about the $100 laptop, but I don’t really see why. I am currently using a $35 laptop that I got off eBay with a $25 network card, it was actually such a good deal that my dad bought 9, prices ranging from $12-$55. A $10 pendrive and a $25 USB floppy drive and we were all set.

These laptops aren’t very fast, with a HUGE 4gb hard drive. Really, all you can do with these is run firefox and a text editor, but with these days of web 2.0, that’s a lot. These laptops can check email, tweet, surf the web, kinda play youTube videos (It runs at about 1fps), blog, and just about anything else. It runs a really small form of linux called Damn Small Linux, a mere 50mb, yet very easy to use and with a whole bunch of programs pre-installed.

The only problem with all of this is that DSL is hard to install in the first place (it took us about 3 weeks to figure out), and the supply of extra laptops isn’t gonna last forever. But other than that these things make very good thin client. I love web 2.0.

I’ve been playing around with Joost for 2 Days and I have to say, it’s really cool. Before I say anything more I need to mention that, no, I do not have any invites. Here is my review:

Joost is a very good idea, and it’s very well Implemented. At this point there are only about 50 channels with an average of about 8 shows each. That sounds like a lot, but then you have to consider that 90% of the shows are complete crap. The only major network that is currently on Joost is the National Geographic Channel, there are about 10 shows on that network, most of them pretty old. There are a few other shows that are/were on real TV (Rocky and Bullwinkle for example). There are also quite a few music videos from major bands like Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Many of the channels are internet TV networks that are not all that good in content or production values. Currently there really isn’t much on, however Viacom has signed a deal with Joost, presumably that would bring channels like Comedy Central, BET, Nickelodean, Spike, TV LAND, and VHR. It could also bring movies from Paramount and Dreamworks. Wouldn’t that just be awesome?

Streaming video on most services can sometimes be slow and low quality. Joost uses P2P to stream the video, so for most channels the streaming is seamless, however for less popular channels it can be a bit slow. The disadvantage of Joost’s P2P nature is that it not only downloads video, it uploads video, so if you have a cap on your bandwidth it will use it up very quickly. The video quality is a lot better than YouTube, still not quite TV quality though. When watching it on a 17in. screen like mine it looks just fine, Leo Laporte claims that on a 30in screen it looks like crap, I really wouldn’t know.

The Joost for mac client definetly isn’t the snappiest or most stable program i’ve used. It has a lot of Mac OS X-ish fades and wipes, but at least on my Core Duo iMac the effects don’t run real time. Sometimes scrolling through the channel list can be painful, and channel information can take up to a minute to load. When watching videos the client normally works nicely, sometimes it is slow and has trouble playing back the video, it has even crashed on me a couple times. For the most part the client is usable, but it is still buggy and needs optimization for Macs. I should mention that it is for intel macs only, i’m not sure if they ever plan to support PPC macs.

Of course, Joost is free money wise, but it does have ads. There are much fewer ads on Joost than on regular TV. You cannot fast-forward through ads, but there is only 1 ad at a time, at an interval of 10 – 30 minutes depending on the channel. The ads are no more than 30 seconds a piece. The only problem is sometimes the ads take a long time to buffer. You might end up waiting as long as a minute to get a 30 second ad. Usually it’s not a problem. Joost ads are very well implemented.

So, Joost is a really cool concept, and they did a good job of making it usable and consumer freindly. The only question is whether or not other TV networks will follow Viacoms lead and join Joost. If all of the major networks join, Joost could hurt/kill regular TV. We just have to wait and see.

I am writing this from my grandmothers house, I was amazed she had internet at all, she is very tech-illiterate. I found myself explaining many basic technologies to her, and I found it very hard, and kinda comical. In case anybody else finds themselves in this situation, here are some ways to explain common technologies to your Grandma or any other tech-illiterate person:

iPods: An iPod is a small device with a wheel on the front. You plug it into your computer and put stuff on it, you then spin the wheel, and it talks to you via a cord that goes into your ear. It will tell you different things depending on how long you spin the wheel, sometimes it will even sing to you.

Skype: Skype is a computer program that makes it so that when you talk to your computer, your computer talks to somebody elses computer. That persons computer then talks to the person using it, who can then talk back.

Windows XP: Windows XP is the thing on your computer that causes it to run slowely. It is the thing that allows your computer to get viruses, just like people. It also provides a pretty blue screen when it get’s a virus, that’s much easier than taking your computer to the doctor.

Web Browsers: Web browsers are computer programs that tell you what’s going on around the world. They can tell you about weather, news, people, possibly some *cough* adult content *cough*. The problem is you have to know what to ask it, if you don’t you could end up with something that you don’t want…

Google: Google knows all the answers to all your questions, if you know how to ask. If you ask it a question, it will tell you the answer by telling you exactly what to ask your web browser. Your web browser will then tell you all about it.

Man, tech is hard…

I’m always the one to get picked last for baseball, I don’t mind because I find it boring anyway. You just hit a ball and run and hope that you aren’t stopped by one of the many confusing rules (that’s my experience anyway). My mom kept begging me to find some sort of sport that I liked, so here are a few options that I found:

The Nintendo Wii (Seriously, it’s hard)

Downhill Skiing (Very fun)

Tennis

Hiking

Swimming

These are all mostly non-competitive, and don’t require you to be all buff to play. See, the trick to losing weight is to find things that you like to do that involve exersize (I highly reccomend the Wii, If you are lucky enough to get one). Now i’m off to play some baseball … on my Wii of course.

Well, I was very lucky yesterday. My parents walked into Wal-mart at the same time as a shipment of 3 Nintendo Wii’s came in. They remembered that my brother and I wanted one, and decided it looked cool. Being the nice people that they are they bought it as an early birthday/ late christmas present. I’m not much of a gamer, but man that thing is fun to play, plus it has photo editing stuff, a web browser, a voting program, forecast, and news! Here are some pictures of me adoring parts of the Wii.

(If you cannot see the pictures than you are probably unintentionally ad-blocking them. There are no ads on this page, so please White List this site)

If anybody else has a Wii, my number is “0728 5398 8091 7621″.
